C) How to book a ride?

What are the different types of carsharing trips?

There are two distinct kinds of car sharing:

- The single trip during which drivers and passengers meet just once in order to make a one-way or a round trip.

- The recurring trip, in which passengers and passengers make the same trip daily or weekly, like for example when two members share their car to go to their work.

In the first case, it consists of an isolated and not repetitive act. In the second case though, it may require a long term commitment from the participants.

In any case our goal is to meet driver’s needs with the needs of the passenger’s

And this is what Shareyourcommute is all about!

Can I post an ad as a passenger?

In Shareyourcommute the drivers suggest and publish various trips and the passangers search for those that might interest them!

That’s why, only drivers are allowed to publish ads on Shareyourcommute.

It’s up to passengers to search for and book the journey that interests them. It is of course possible for a passenger to contact a driver through our messaging system.

There are so many journeys posted on Shareyourcommute that is very easy to find what you are looking for. If you can’t find your ideal trip, you can create an alert!

Can I travel with a package or an animal?

It’s possible to transport a package or an animal, but you are required to be present during its transportation.

Before booking your place for a trip, make sure that the driver has agreed to the transportation of your package or of your pet! You can ask him via our messaging system if you are allowed to do so, and also by describing the size and contents of the package, or the size of the animal and the conditions under which it will travel.

The driver has the right to ask you to open the package and to know the content it carries. In fact, in case of a police control, he is the one responsible for the goods that are transported. Thus, you must take every precaution when transporting objects or animals in a long-distance or transboundary trip (remember to bring along any purchase bills or health records for an animal, etc).

In addition, there is no guarantee against theft or damage of any items carried through carpooling. Community carpooling works on the basis of mutual trust and although we haven’t had any complaints to date, we ask you to be cautious.

Can I book a trip on the last moment?

Carsharing is the absolute last-minute solution.

However we advise you to book your seat at least 2 hours before the journey so as to avoiding missing the departure time.

Unbooked seats remain available on our page until the departure time.

Do kids have to pay full-price when they are travelling?

A child occupies an entire seat and sometimes it even requires a special seat.

So there is no reason it can have a reduced or special price.

However, it is advisable to contact the driver before booking your places, in order to ensure that he accepts to transport the kid into his vehicle and that he is properly equipped to do so (by having a child seat, a booster seat, etc. ..). If the driver does not have the required equipment for the transportation of a child, you may be asked to provide it.

We also remind you that the use of this website is not allowed to minors, unless the reservation for a trip is made by his/hers parents, and only if they have given their prior consent.

D) Contacting a driver

How can I contact a driver?

Sometimes it is necessary to ask the driver a few questions, even though in most cases all the basic information (departure time, stops, duration…) are clearly mentioned on the ad, allowing for direct booking.

Shareyourcommute has an integrated messaging system that helps you contact directly each and every driver. This messaging system enables you to ask and to respond to any questions posed by another member in an easy and free way.

You can easily manage your messages in Shareyourcommute: access your inbox, see all your messages, write and send new messages, delete old, etc... Overall you have all the main features of a regular mail service.

You can always write a message to a driver, when you have a specific request or if you want to know more details of their journey. Simply log in on Shareyourcommute and then click on the trip that interests you.

When you contact a driver for the first time, he/she will be alerted by SMS about your message.

You also have the option to access your messages from space "Messages".

Booking confirmation and payment

Shareyourcommute is a platform that brings together drivers and passengers. That is why we take zero commission for any of the trips that are posted on our page. In addition, only contacting the driver of the trip that interests you is not enough to reserve a spot; you must also wait for confirmation from him. Indeed, it may well be that it hasn’t any more seats available in his car and he hadn’t had the time to update his listing.
You and the driver can decide the payment method; however, it is common that drivers prefer to be paid in cash, at the end of the journey. We recommend that you have on you the exact amount in case the driver doesn’t have change.

E) The journey

Do you have any advices for carpooling?

Although it is mostly up to the driver to guarantee a good carpooling experience, there are a few common sense rules that should be met by the passenger too!

Always remember this simple rule:

  • In order to be a good carpooler, you should be like a good father when you are the driver, and like a polite guest when you are the passenger.

Carpooling is an exchange between people, so just apply the basic rules of etiquette:

  • - Don’t consider the driver as your personal taxi driver
  • - Do not engage with different drivers for the same journey
  • - Do not be late or cancel at the last minute
  • - Do not have extravagant demands (20km detour)
  • Provide the deposit in advance if the path is not available for online booking
  • - Do not try to negotiate the originally agreed price
  • - Do not leave trash in the car, etc…

All these little rules may seem obvious but it is always worth repeating them:

  • - Carpooling can also be a great opportunity to meet other people and to have interesting conversations with them! But please remember that this is not always the case. We all have the right to be tired sometimes or to not have any affinity with each other. However, an effort to break the ice, at least early in the trip and out of politeness, is always welcomed.
  • - Finally, do not forget that once the journey has been made to leave a comment about your experience. It's always nice to receive a positive opinion, and it contributes to the functioning of the community.

How can I cancel my journey?

Something unexpected that won’t allow you to make your trip can always happen!

Don’t lose any time and inform immediately the driver that you have to cancel your seat. That way he might have enough time to find someone to replace you.

How can I leave a comment about my driver?

Your feedback is important!

It is thanks to your opinion that the trust is established every day between the members of the Shareyourcommute community.

Leaving a comment after using our page site provides a clear picture of your carpooling experience.

You can write a review or leave a comment right after your trip (please remember you can’t leave a comment a review for a trip that hasn’t happened yet).

III. I am a driver

A) How to publish a trip

What are the different types of carsharing?

There are two distinct kinds of car sharing:

  • • The single trip during which drivers and passengers meet just once in order to make a one-way or a round trip.
  • • The recurring trip, in which passengers and passengers make the same trip daily or weekly, like for example when two members share their car to go to their work.

In the first case, it consists of an isolated and not repetitive act. In the second case though, it may require a long term commitment from the participants. In any case our goal is to meet driver’s needs with the needs of the passenger’s. And this is what Shareyourcommute is all about!

What are the steps that I have to follow in order to create an ad for trip?

Shareyourcommute is very fast and easy to use. You only have to log in on our page, and then to click on “My trips” and “Add a trip”. Fill in the blanks on the relative form and it’s done!

How can I accept a reservation?

When a member of Shareyourcommute is interested in your trip, he/she can decide to contact you through our messaging service or by sending you an SMS (in the case that you posted your number on our website). Then it’s up to you to answer to the interested members and to either confirm or not the reservation.

Why do you suggest that I add stopover towns?

Stopover towns are urban centres that you will or can pass through on your way to your final destination. Adding stopover cities is not required but it is recommended in order to optimize your chances of finding passengers:

When you publish a trip, there are chances that people may not be interested in its entirety, but they may be looking for a ride on a specific portion of your journey.

Example: You publish an ad for the trip Peterborough-London.

By adding Cambridge as a stopover city, a person who is looking for a ride from Peterborough to Cambridge or Cambridge to London would see your offer in their list of search results.

In order to help you, we will suggest a few stopover cities for your journey. But you are free to choose any cities you wish!

I can't publish my trip, what should I do?

Please remember to fill in all the required information before publishing your ad:

  • • The departure city as well as your destination
  • • The pick-up and the drop-off points
  • • The date and the hour of departure
  • • Is your trip a round trip? Don’t forget to add information for both dates.

How and when will I get paid?

Shareyourcommute is a carsharing platform that meets drivers’ needs with passengers’. That’s why we don’t make any benefit of our service.

Therefore when you confirm a passenger’s booking, it is up to you to specify your preferred method of payment. Nevertheless, payment in cash at the end of the journey is the most common method of payment.

How do I set the price?

The driver decides the price; it is the same for all passengers and cannot be negotiated.

The driver must calculate the price per passenger in accordance with the itinerary and the overall cost of the ride. Drivers are free to set the price they want by taking into account the comfort of their car or the stopover towns.

As a rule, the price per passenger consists of a third the gas price and of the tolls: a journey with three passengers should cover the cost of your ride.

B) How to manage my ad

How can I edit my ad?

If you wish to modify your ad and/or to add or reduce the number of the available seats, just go to "My trips" and click on "Edit trip" to make any corrections to any of the rides you are offering

If you have already agreed to take passengers, please take into account the inconvenience you may cause them if you change or cancel your journey plans. In case that this new trip is not convenient to the rest of the passengers, you will have to delete it and create a new one.

By deleting your trip, the reservations made will be cancelled. That's why you will have to inform the passengers as soon as possible.

How can I delete my trip?

You are not making this trip anymore?

If so you must delete your trip’s ad immediately, so that it doesn’t appear in the search results.

It’s very fast to delete your ad:

  • • Firstly select the ad
  • • Click on ‘Delete’
  • • Confirm that you want to delete your journey

How do I see and respond to my messages?

Did a passenger ask you a question?

On your profile page you can see all your messages in the section “My Messages”. Besides each time you have a new message, you will receive an alert on the email address you used during your registration.

If you don’t want to receive these alerts anymore, please click on “Emails preference” to turn them off.

What happens if a passenger cancels his booking?

It might so happen that a passenger will cancel his booking at the very last minute.

If that happens and you have a free seat, don’t lose any time! Go to your ad and make sure you add the newly available seat. This way you might have time to find a new passenger for your trip!

C) My responsibilities as a driver

Luggage transport and driver’s responsibility

According to the law you, as a driver, are the one who is responsible for any baggage that is in your vehicle, whether it belongs to you or to your passengers.

This gives you the right to ask to open and inspect the contents of any luggage that you will transport in your car. We understand that this is not practical or easy, however that is the law. So far there have been neither complaints nor any incidents, but it is recommended to take the necessary measures especially on cross-borders trips.

In case of a problem:

First, we would like to reassure you that we have already organized several millions of carpools, and this problem has never occurred before. Of course that can’t predict the future, but it should still reassure you that the probability of an incident of this type is very low.

It is important to keep in mind that the people who are registered on our page are not anonymous. We have all the necessary information that would allow us to trace the people whom contacted you in order to arrange a carpool, and we would do our best to help you in case of trouble. In a case of a problem we will help you by providing you all the information needed to certify that the linking was done by the website and therefore that you didn't know or have any connections to that person previous to the trip.

Here is the information we could provide to the authorities to exonerate the innocent person:

  • - Registration date and member page of all parties concerned
  • - Email and phone of all members involved
  • - Date of your written exchanges on the page of Shareyourcommute
  • - Booking date, if applicable

We recommend that you always have a written proof of your conversations with the other members. If you just communicate through direct calls, ask kindly the other member to write you a short message through our internal messaging system, in order to have a written record of your contact (the content is not important, it is just to say that this person contacted you on that particular day and time).

Cross-borders trips: precautions and mandatory documents

As a driver, you are entitled to ensure that each passenger carries with him valid identification documents.

Similarly, passengers may request to verify your driver's license, that you have a valid MOT and that your vehicle is insured.

We understand that such request may seem difficult but it is definitely recommended in some cases.

Our advice:

Please request such information in case of doubt or in case of a cross-border trip.

Up until the departure, you have the right to refuse to travel with a passenger who doesn’t have consistent identity papers.

In case of a police control:

Firstly, in case of a police control, please insist on the fact that you do not know the aforementioned person and that you just met through our website with the sole purpose of carpooling trip.

Rest assured, it would be easy enough to prove that you didn’t know this person before and that the linking was done solely in the context of a carpooling trip. We may also provide all available information, thus attesting to the authorities of your innocence.

These recommendations also apply to any questions relating to the contents of any baggage or objects you arrange to transport through this website.

What to do in case of a breakdown or technical problem?

Generally, the driver is responsible for the passengers he carries and it is his insurance that should cover them, as for example, it would have been in the case that they were his family members.

Indeed, the insurance does not distinguish the passengers that are carpooling, on the sole condition that the driver is not benefiting economically from such action, in which case he would be obligated by law to have a professional insurance.

However, the options of medical care and cover of expenses depend solely on the contract you have purchased and your insurance will only meet you on these points.

We simply expect the driver to act like a "good father" and to do everything necessary so that his passengers arrive safely at their destination.

Please, in case of a problem, do not hesitate to contact us. Our team can provide you with an appropriate response to any of the issues or problems you encounter.

Who is responsible in the case of an accident?

Carpooling is a safe way of travelling, given the fact that many people may be attentive to the road at the same time, and so accidents are extremely rare and difficult to happen.

However, in the case of an accident, the driver is responsible for all the passengers in his car and it is his insurance that will cover them, as for example, it would have been in the case that they were his family members.

A carpooling trip is not different from any other normal trip and it is always the driver's insurance that supports all the passengers in case of an accident.

In any case, the driver should always do its utmost to help any of the passengers who suffered the consequences of an accident, including providing details of his insurance.

Of course, it is also important to contact us so that our team can provide you with an appropriate response and possibly provide you with any necessary assistance.

D) Travelling with passengers

What is expected of me as a driver?

Always remember this simple rule:

In order to be a good carpooler, you should be like a good father when you are the driver, and like a polite guest when you are the passenger.

Indeed, the driver must be impeccable at all levels, take care of the welfare of its passengers and to listen to their requests, as long as they are within a reasonable level.

He should drive safely and relaxed, staying focused on the road and to avoid committing any indiscretions.

He should leave the passengers at the scheduled drop-off point (not by the side of the motorway or in the middle of nowhere!).

The driver who publishes a carpooling ad must also think about the comfort of its passengers and he should avoid overloading his car, especially if each passenger brings his own travel bag/suitcase.

Finally, carpooling can also be a great opportunity to meet other people and to have interesting conversations with them! But please remember that this is not always the case. We all have the right to be tired sometimes or to not have any affinity with each other.

However, an effort to break the ice, at least early in the trip and out of politeness, is always welcomed.

Please do not forget to leave a comment about your carpooling experience, it's always nice to receive a positive opinion, and it contributes to the functioning of the community. You'll most likely receive a review or a comment back from the other members, if you leave one too.

How can I leave a comment about my passengers?

Your feedback is important!

It is thanks to your opinion that the trust is established every day between the members of the Shareyourcommute community.

Leaving a comment after using our page site provides a clear picture of your carpooling experience

You can write a review or leave a comment right after your trip (please remember you can’t leave a comment a review for a trip that hasn’t happened yet).

WHAT IS

A) First Steps

Why do I need to add a photo?

Adding a photo to your profile is very important: it’s reassuring to be able to see the people with whom you will be travelling and it is vital to be able to recognise the person at the pick-up point.

On average, users with a photo are three times more likely to get contacted!

The accepted formats are jpeg, gif and png and files measuring no more than 2 (MB).

I've received a comment that I feel is wrong, can I delete it?

Shareyourcommute is a community of members who interact autonomously; we are just providing you with the platform that enables this kind of interaction. The only comments and ratings that we delete automatically are those that are offensive or discriminatory.

Although we understand that a comment may seem unjust, it also reflects the perception of its author and we can’t know whether it is valid or not, or take the side of any of the parties involved.

We are sure you understand that if we deleted all the negative ratings that are posted, the ratings system would be distorted.

How do I know if I can trust another member?

It’s important to note that members use their real identities and no pseudonyms are accepted. This means that all our members use their real name and an actual photo when registering, this ensures that all our members will behave responsibly. Moreover phone numbers and emails are both verified and we offer Facebook Connect so members can link their Shareyourcommute profile to their existing social networking accounts.

The community uses reputations built over time to build trust, and ensure that all members respect the Shareyourcommute spirit of positive community collaboration.

When two members meet in real life to car share, they publicly rate each other: before you travel with another member you can read their ratings and benefit from the experience of other members who have met that person.

What is not authorised?

Any dangerous or illegal behaviour is forbidden, for example: driving without a licence, not insuring your car, driving while drunk, not respecting the Highway Code, etc.

Inappropriate behaviour is also forbidden; drivers and passengers must act in a respectful and considerate manner at all times. Furthermore, it not authorised to contact other users with requests unrelated to car sharing. Any behaviour of this type will result in the immediate termination of your account, for example, dating requests are considered inappropriate.

It is also important to note that it is in no way authorised for drivers to make a profit from car sharing activity. Our service is intended and has been designed for drivers to offset their running costs and not to make profit.

Any breach will lead to the termination of your account.

What age restrictions apply?

For security reasons, minors are not allowed to join Shareyourcommute, and if you are under 18 your account will be suspended.

Do you have any suggestions for us?

Shareyourcommute can improve itself thanks to all the comments of our members. We are always listening to your ideas, suggestions for improvements and feature requests! While they may have already been submitted and even though we can’t implement them all, do not hesitate to let us know. We are glad to hear all of your ideas and improvements of our website, so don’t hesitate to contact us.
